How to commission a portrait:
I will need a good photo of the subject, a 5" X 7" photograph that shows details is good. The original photograph will be returned to you along with the finished portrait. Or you may scan the photograph and email it to me. If you would like me to take a digital photograph for you I'd be happy to at no extra charge if you are in the Des Moines area.
I use Prismacolor or Polychromo Colored Pencils on high quality paper for all my portraits. I'll begin with a light graphite pencil outline of the subject. It's important that this outline is accurate being graphite pencil is easy to erase, once I apply the colored pencil, it's much harder to erase and easy to ruin the paper. When I'm satisfied with the outline I begin layering the colored pencils going from light to dark to get the correct color depth. Many layers are used to achieve a realistic detailed appearance.
At different stages of the portrait I can email you a picture to let you see how it's coming along and you can let me know if there's any changes that need to be made.
The time needed to complete a portrait from start to finish is approximately 2-3 weeks depending on the complexity of the piece. I may also have a number of portraits in progress. If you need a portrait for a special occasion and have a time limit, let me know.
Once the portrait is finished and you approve of it, payment is due. If you live in the Des Moines area, I can deliver the portrait to you or you may pick it up at my Studio. If you are outside the area your portrait will be shipped insured, Priority USPS. Shipping charges will be additional.
